Just a thought
First of all, I'm mainly talking about 5.0, because BSG someone or other made a villager preservation or something on 4.0. It's mainly a lost cause, anyway.
It
is going to be hard to get to villages before someone locks them up to make prices higher. However, if villagers can't be killed, it will be well-nigh impossible for someone to get a
complete monopoly on the emerald market, at least without weeks of nothing but minecraft, and even then, most likely, someone else would have made a preservation. However, if they could be killed, people wouldn't need to slowly annex every village; they would just have to go around killing. In addition, even if they haven't got intentions to steal the emerald market (bad monopoly is bad), people often will go around killing villagers randomly. The chances of the hundreds of players on MineRealm not wiping out the villagers is too low to allow for their extinction, or even to allow for a player to gain control of the market. IMO, at least, we need something to help stop the villagers from dying. Not only because of the market, but because, well, they're kinda cute. Some people like villagers, and it just isn't fair to deny people access to
any villagers. That would be like making it so cows or chickens or pigs or something could only spawn in the realms of people who managed to annex the right areas.
