As seen in the above tweet from Jeb, the next major update is planned to contain new blocks which look like they'll probably only be available from newly-generated terrain. So, if we do the public wipe for 1.7 but not 1.8, these resources wouldn't be available on Minerealm, at least until another hypothetical public wipe in the very far (possibly years) future.

Maybe the wipe should be rescheduled until 1.8 in light of this development. Though this does also raise the question, what if the next update, and the one after that, and the one after that, etc. keep introducing new resources only available from new terrain? We're going to need long-term solutions for this kind of thing. Possibly yearly public wipes? Easily-wipeable terrain extensions like the wilderness? Temp side worlds? Discuss.

Oh, come on jeb_. We can't possibly be the only people who are having issues with this. They specifically stated that they were trying to fit as much updated terrain into 1.7 as possible so they could focus on gameplay updates for a while and give people a chance to stay up to date without constantly wiping their maps.

The Wilderness can be wiped to get new terrain and resources - that's the main reason for its existence. The impending public realm wipe has been proposed mainly to replace griefed, mined-out public land with virgin land to encourage new players to join the server. Obtaining the new 1.7 terrain is just a side benefit.

I definitely don't agree with postponing the public land wipe until after MineCraft 1.8 is released. That could be a good six months away by the time Mojang release it and Bukkit update. In the meantime there are many players who have demolished most of their builds to ready their land for wiping and are currently in a state of limbo, just filling time until the new terrain is imported and they can start building again.

I'm not sure it would be worthwhile to modify minerealm's updating/wiping schedule, basically because of the reasons TJD just gave. I do think, though, that new items being introduced from regular wilderness wipes would be a good workaround. It does mean that new items will be relatively rare/expensive right after being introduced, which could be seen as either a bug or a feature depending on your personal preferences.

this is the reason why i love MR so much all the good ideas intelli comes up with makes this server really good :D

There's at least a couple kinds of granite, some are whitish, some greysh, some blackish, some pinkish. I dunno, I'm no geologist either.
