Because my previous idea was rejected however I was given no indication as to the cause of this rejection, I have decided to assume that the idea was originally rejected due to a 5 option poll, rather than 2 option. So, I will quote my post from the said thread and you can tell me what you think (READ THE SPOILER!):
Spoiler:
JonColmanator wrote:At this moment in time, as you all know; all newbies are spawned at Spawn City which is a bustling hive of activity. Afterwards, the newbies ask where they can build, when a member replies "You need to find a public realm. Walk 1000 blocks to find a public realm." Although looking at the map, there are almost no decently workable public realms within the 1000 blocks, if they want a fairly decent place to start, they sometimes have to go twice as far. This in itself can be an annoyance and off-putting for newbies. To all but the very patient newbies, this is a rather unwelcoming struggle, so they rage and leave. That might be good news for some, but for me personally it's a slight let down.
This being said, the area around Spawn City is astronomically more developed than almost every other town and village, and I've come across quite a few seemingly abandoned towns and villages (take Korriban for example). This might be because their few members quit for personal reasons, or because they've found bigger pursuits in minerealm. But the point is, Spawn City, is one of the few seriously developed settlements which haven't seemingly be abandoned. Also, this leads to lots of interest in realms in Spawn City, among the more seasoned MineRealmers at least, which further boosts development of Spawn and keeps the development of other towns and villages slow or even grind them to a halt.
A third point is that many of the more seasoned MineRealmers aren't exactly accustomed to lending newbies a hand beyond pointing them in the 1000 block direction. This leaves the newbies more or less hung out to dry as they have few or no tutor willing to show them the server-specific ropes of Minerealm and they only have other newbies to turn to, most of them on an equal level and seeming having to deal not only with the more challenging of previously wrecked public realms, but with each other for the little and precious building room, despite said rooms difficult to tame with little equipment.
So my idea? First of all, have all newbies spawn in a short tutorial room with the usual spawn signs prominent for them to read. Once they have passed through the spawn sign corridors they enter a 'Spawn Selection Room' which have Four signs prominent. These signs are to tell newbies what going to either spawn entails, and how to get to that spawn (see image commented "Example"). This way newbies who personally know more experienced players who could tutor them can go the usual spawn route, yet complete newbies are taken to a point with much nearer public land which can encourage development in that area and more of a community effort in that area instead of each newbie for himself. This also gives newbies a choice of which spawn to go to so groups of newbies go to the same place, this saves the newbie confusion we had back when we had three fixed spawn points.
Second, this idea does not entail having a rigid fixed spawn point like Abyssus and Roanoke were (vets and players reasonably close to will remember this). However, players can nominate their town/village to become the second spawn point by using the old request spawn point command. All nominee points are entered into a list, each assigned their own index number, their location noted and whether they have been recently selected as the second spawn (that is, if the nominee is currently the second spawn, or was second spawn prior to the current one). After a set period of time (take a month for example), the server randomly selects a number, if the selected spawn point hasn't recently been the second spawn point, it becomes the second spawn point and the /warp2 command gets assigned to that location. Otherwise, the random select procedure is repeated until a suitable nominee is selected. Thus, the second spawn point is a more dynamic one.
This allows new users to enter the Minerealm world through a town or village where public land is easier to get to, build on and work together instead of every newbie for himself. And even then, the town or village is likely to have some more experienced players who have shown that they are willing to have newbies extend their settlement. Thus, a second spawn can help bring experienced and newbie players together and make an even more community feel to the server. More community = more fun. However, the fact that the second spawn can change from place to place means that smaller towns and villages with easier public land will more than likely be accessible to newbies and does not over-accelerate the growth of a certain settlement. In laymans terms, none of the second spawns end up getting as huge as Spawn City, making Spawn City the grand hub of the map as many experienced Minerealmers prefer, yet all towns and villages get some attention.
tl;dr: Keep usual spawn but have a changing second spawn for helpless newbies.
Now, for the Pros and Cons that I can see in this idea:
Pros:
Cons:
- The Current Spawn City stays as popular as it normally does.
- This time, newbies get a choice between where they spawn, so friend newbies stay together and don't get confused.
- Small towns and villages recieve some attention from players, and thus develop at a faster rate.
- Every experienced player in these small towns and villages opted to potentially be around a newbie spawn point, so will probably be willing to tutor and help groups of newbies, giving a more community feel.
- The second spawn changes from place to place after a set amount of time, shifting newbie introduction to different places whilst hopefully settled newbies from the previous spawn stay on the server and at that spawn, developing it further.
- Less complaints about how 'there isn't any land to build on'.
- Nowadays, at least 85% of the land is public, there could be lots of willing towns and villages nearby these public realms.
- Even fewer complaints about lack of land.
- Spawn City can be quite lag intensive for some computers with all the construction work done on it, which can put off newbies. Second Spawn could be a less lag intensive and more welcoming to newbies with weaker computers.
- There is less chance of a town or village become a ghost town, like Korriban apparently is.
Feel free to add your own Pros, Cons and opinions, guys.
- This requires quite a bit of coding. Coding can get complicated and buggy, especially with a more complex idea such as this. Coding can also increase demand on the server's memory, which is never good.
- Because public land is closer to the second spawn, said land is easier to grief.
- Easier to grief tends to mean more grief, regardless of whether creative is seen as the grief hub of Minerealm.
- More grief means mods will definitely have their work cut out for them if they haven't already.
- Some newbies simply cannot live nextdoor to one another in a virtual world. Could cause squabbling.
- Experienced players at Second Spawn could end up seeing more newbie buildings than they bargained for.
- Could potentially be a threat to the wildly popular Spawn Realm market.
- Could result in more general server lag.
