Try downloading and installing the optifine mod. Ive found it works wonders on performance issues and removes the horrible lag-o-meter

Try to re-install java? You never know if it works..... Don't know why this happens to you. It could easily be a virus. A virus aimed for Java crap on your browser..... but it also affects Minecraft? I don't know , stupid ideas from someone who doesn't know anything about Java and/or computers...

If your computer is older (I'm assuming it is from the Pentium 4.... ewwwwww) then it could be that something is finally giving way under the relatively high strain that minecraft can put on your system.

Check the RAM http://www.memtest.org/ If you have more than 1 stick of RAM in your machine, you can try removing one, try playing minecraft, then put it back and remove the other stick, to check for a single faulty stick of RAM.

Check the CPU http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/ FYI Prime95 will RAPE your computer up, down and sideways. My computer failed after like 5 hours.

Check the hard drive (use the error checking util that comes with your OS)


EDIT: Also, if we are into the subject of AV software, Avast and AVG are both free and updated fairly regularly. Also, check your school/University to see if they get a deal on it... I got free Sophos, which is BRILLIANT I might add.
