I'm telling you with 100% certainty that the edge of the survival map is not the edge of the actual world.

Too bad you said anything. I was looking forward to hearing back when people discovered that the map's edges extend 7 or 8 blocks past where they could actually go in-game. Also, the border guard doesn't port you back from where you came, only back to the inside by a few blocks. So it would be funny hearing from people who were wandering perpendicular to the border and ended up being ported back a few blocks and embedded into stone.

Whilst I haven't tried looking to see whether the blocks can be mined in game.
I have spent time walking perpendicular to the edge of the map at the western border, like a goldfish swimming round the edge of its bowl. A couple of times I've been down caves and tried with a bit of frustration to reach for blocks that would be forever beyond my reach. ^^
What can sometimes happen when you try to go past the border is that you are bounced back and sometimes you can also end up being ported to the surface, if there are blocks behind you.
One time I ported back, I ended up being ported into a patch of cactuses, that I had planted to define the edge of the map.

It is legal as Intelli stated because the first time I saw the edge of the world map I got this exact idea of mining diamonds. After searching for about 30 minutes in one spot and digging out a cave where the map said there were diamonds I noticed that the map ends about 5 blocks before where the over view map said it ends because I was about to grab the diamonds but it was at block -5000 and if you walk out of the map underground then it teleports you directly above where you walk out except on the surface

You would find diamonds faster strip mining at layer 12.

All the time it would take to journey to the edge of the map isn't worth it, really.

Tried it, you were right. The map ends some 5 blocks away from what you see on the minerealm map.

More grinding for me I suppose.

I got a stack and a half of dia ore strategically mining under level 12 in about....45 minutes, so... .
