Example: Shortly after the first episode, people started posting pictures of a walleyed grey Pegasus that they dubbed "Derpy Hooves". She was just a background character, but people took notice of her walleyed expression. She started showing up places and it became a sort of "Where's Waldo" kinda thin for the fans. The creators took notice of this and gave a nod to the fans by adding Derpy in a sort of cut away in the "Feeling Pinkie Keen" episode (where Derpy accidentally drops a moving van's contents on the main character, Twilight Sparkle in a very Loony Tunes way).
The humor is simple enough for children, but there are little shout outs for the older people, the plot is good, and the characters are endearing. It's just one of those things you should watch to understand.
