I'm highly thinking of leaving meadowfall. I was misinformed on what was actually there and it highly disapointed me.

I think the market establishes the "price" of factions. The weak ones get weeded out over time and the strong ones flourish, stagnate, and eventually split and more factions are made and the process starts over again. If you don't like having a ton of factions, just ignore them and wait for the cycle to work itself to the low point again.

Personally, I prefer to do my own thing and help people out when the need arises.

Oh yeah, and I still think we need factions to have to be officially accepted by staff in order to call themselves a faction. Yeah, it would be a bit odd, kind of restrict the freedom, but it would fix the problem of tons and tons of the same thing.

I think having tons of factions is silly, but it would be more silly to limit who is allowed to congregate under a common name. Would it be bannable if a group of people started calling themselves something without admin approval? What would be the criteria for having a "good" faction? Any noobs can create a grand game plan for their future. It's doing it in practice that is difficult. How many amazing, completely derelict cities are strewn across minerealm? The only real sustainable model for faction continuation is, as I believe you mentioned previously, a group of friends coming together under one banner. But it would be folly to exclude people who just want numbers, even if we all know they are doomed to failure in the long run.
