No purpose? I could name a few good situations.

1. You are a spectator to a maze figth. You want to know who kills who, and not be killed by the other spectators.

2. You know someone is going to have a dual elsewhere, but you would'nt risk having pvp on.

3. You want to know when there is PvP at spawn, but without risking having PvP on, so you can gear up and join the fight.

4. also to know every time Silverknightm gets killed by creepers, and still being able to disable it if chat is overflowing.

1. This is covered in chat, as the dying party always says they are dead, and this is the same for the winner, who always celebrates in chat.

2. Same as above.

3. PvP at spawn is always announced in chat, you don't need to know that people are dying to realise people are PvP'ing.

4. I'm not sure about this one, however I feel that the large majority of the server aren't going to feel left out if they miss knowing Silver gets taken by a creeper.

Intelli's always been for less commands. Simplicity is key to a happy server.

Death notices were kind of funny to watch. They had a tendency to spam the chat though...
