I can understand why it was done, but the approach seems a little heavy-handed. There isn't much that can be done now though, the damage is done. I suggest people file ban appeals or leave with some dignity, and avoid the forum banhammer.
However, this isn't the end of the world. As someone pointed out earlier, it is just a videogame.
