Looks like the influences of the marketing department to me.
I kindof prefered the idea of only Luna and Celestia being Alicorns as it kept them rare and special, but should be an interesting series finale nevertheless.
Not sure what to make of Shining Armour being Twilights' older brother, climbing the ranks of privillege and status it would appear.
The two characters do seem to be somewhat inspired by Prince Harry and Kate Middleton, but with the royal status reversed.

As for Shining Armor, his attire suggests he is/was a soldier, so there's a chance that he was deployed/assigned elsewhere, hence why he never made an appearance. As for why Twilight never mentioned anything, I don't believe anyone ever asked her if she had a brother.

Just thought I'd drop this in here. This is one of my favorite reviewers off the "That guy with the glasses" site. Top being the Nostalgia critic. I thought he did a great job giving the history of G4 ponies as well as the 80s cartoon. It also show how the show was even hated before it even showed a single episode. All in all i thought it would be a great video to see how this whole thing began.
