Some suggestions:

Work with noise (HSV-Noise)
Arial is boring. Some Better Fonts: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/01 ... onts-2012/
Be careful with colors: http://kuler.adobe.com/. or look at the smashing font examples
There are many great Brushes (Smoke, Noise, Textures, Patterns). Photoshop Brushes are compatible with gimp
Avoid Shadows and Glossy Fonts

Thanks Connor! I found this site in 2009-2010 I think and forgot the address. I downloaded some good ones off of there. Pokemon font.

That's what I use for all my fonts. The only trouble I'd ever have with it is licenses, But I've never done anything big enough with my company to have to worry about that. And you're just doing art, so it shouldn't matter :3

Paint.net is pretty cool, I used it to make my current sig. I don't know if it compares to Photoshop though.
