Good idea Intelli.

Earning a realm will make new players care about what happens to the server (and the time/effort they have spent on it). Joining an existing realm will gaurantee that someone has at least considered whether they are a worthwhile human being (as opposed to a griefer).

Simple but effective, I like it.

I like the having 10k rc/owning a realm idea over just being a member of a realm as it does show dedication.
Perhaps if a member of a realm they would have to be X amount of days/hrs played before going into the nether as well.

The players still need 100RC, and would need to understand what RC is and how to give credits, which would also mean they would most likely have to read /help
Or, alternatively, players could add people that they know IRL or from other servers to their realms, and the new players have access to the Nether without necessarily knowing anything about the server. Even in this case, though, the new players in question have a more experienced member of the server showing them the ropes, so hopefully this wouldn't cause problems.

Another potential downside is that it would lead to additional spam in the chat ("I wanna go to teh nethers but teh portal sez I can't so plz can someone make me op so I can go to nethers plz?"). Presumably, however, our Supreme Overlord could be programmed to give a response to such questions, so even though the chat box might be a bit clogged up, at least the staff and veteran players won't have to be bothered to write a response.

I definitely like this idea a lot. I think there should be some minimum standard of competence to access the Nether, but the experience point system sounded like it might just be a hassle for all players, old and new.

That's one of the reasons why Intelli is saying "owner or member".

These are just a few of the many reasons.
This. Needless to say, any random noob can just come in the nether (unarmed and unknowing of the skilled fighters that wait ahead) and there is no clear distinction on who is a local on the server, and who is some nub who just joined. If players knew that only players level _ can be in the nether, they would take more precaution because they could better understand the dangers of the nether on this server; to it's specificity.
