With the map being made infinite in the upcoming 1.9 update, I've been thinking a transportation system faster than currently planned Minerealm Subway may be useful as spawn points begin to get created dozens of thousands of blocks away from eachother. So, I propose that we build a railway system through the highest or lowest regions of the nether. A subway built in this manner will use 1/8 the material and travel 8 times as fast as one made in the overworld. Plus, in this thread, Intelli himself set the precedent that destroying structures in the nether is, in fact, considered griefing. The obvious problem with this is that people looking to pvp may begin camping the stations, but to me the pros greatly outweigh the cons of this situation.

Please, share your thoughts on this idea.

Edit:
I've had a couple of thoughts that I think may help to fuel further discussion of this idea. The first is that if the main problem with this railroad is that it would be griefed too often, then why not attach it to the nether spawn roads? I've traveled across these roads more than a few times, and during just about every trip I've noticed that the roads were, surprisingly enough, completely in-tact. This leads me to believe that the moderators and admins are perfectly capable of maintaining the roads through rollbacks and such, so then why not simply run a rail or two along the sides of them to make crossing them that much faster?

The second thought is that, unlike most ideas and suggestions, this one does not strictly require "Intelli's Seal of Approval." It doesn't require any modifications to the workings of the server and can be maintained in the exact same manner as the nether spawn roads have been thus far. So, while his blessing would be much appreciated and very likely to fuel even more support for this, I don't really see much of a reason we can't all pull together and go through with it anyway.

Also keep in mind that this is not intended as a replacement for the currently planned Minerealm Subway. The nether is still considered an extremely dangerous method of transportation, and as such, it would be very unwise to transport anything of value through it. Until this changes, an overworld subway would still be an incredibly useful thing to have.

Sounds like a good idea in theory, but the Nether is going to get wrecked all to heck by people, and the railroad will probably get destroyed in the process. You find a way to avoid that, and I'd approve the idea =D

To deal with camping, we could build multiple parallel railways. Pvpers can't camp all of them at once.

This idea is just crazy enough to work!

Bad idea.

10 hours after railroad is finished:

I like this. If griefing railways in the nether is treated the same as griefing in the overworld, but PvP against people using the rails is allowed, then it would make for an interesting option in travel. Do you want to have a nice safe trip through 8000 blocks of overworld railroad... or take the 1000-block route through the nether with the risk of encountering a bandit?

That's what makes it interesting. If you go to the nether for faster travel, the consequences are yours to deal with.

I'd suggest the railroad be built inside a tunnel of some sort of material that's not native to the nether (likely one of the three stone block variants) so that it's easily distinguishable from everything else and cannot be mistakenly griefed. Also, if that's not enough to deter people we could always place a curtain of lava over the tunnel as well.

Mods and admins can easily rollback railroad damage and ban those who caused it

Like I said, I believe the 1/8 material cost and travel time outweigh this problem.

Every railroad would lead directly into a station, all of which would have nether portals in them positioned so that they connect perfectly with safe-to-exit portals in the overworld.

Problem: In my experience, Nether portals don't always take you to the same portal. probably has something to do with people griefing portals in either the main world or the Nether, thus causing you to bet bumped to a different portal.

It is a good idea but going on the greifing we have had to the Abyssus nether spawn road I think it would get greifed within days of completion.

In my experience, each individual portal has pretty rigid 'connections' with specific other ones, just it's hard to predict before you go through the first time. But just slap a sign on each one telling where it goes and it should be acceptable. Also, best to ask owners of whatever realms the portals happen to glom on to to provide a safe area and road out into the open.
