It's very easy to conduct trade in a safe manner (if you don't trust the person to not kill you in wilderness, you shouldn't be trading anyway). Nonetheless, if for some reason you have to do the trade and you don't trust him, you can always go to the far reaches of spawn city. I gave Doddsde his 5 diamonds and publicly announced that I was doing so and nobody showed up or tried to take them (lag meant the diamonds were visible on the ground for quite some time).
