Does anyone even read my posts? I mean, the point of a forum is to have a conversation with people, not completely ignore what they actually say in favor of accusing them of being too "extreme" and make jokes about things that cause people to commit suicide.

I guess I should probably leave this thread now. Either you'll come to your senses, or circlejerk into oblivion. Either way, I won't have to deal with it anymore.

Insulting people to vote to ban a word (that could be used as an insult in certain contexts), is not going to convince them to agree. Just saying.

I had a big post written up, but it got deleted.

Suffice to say the following:

I acknowledge that you may have a point TJ; I'm not sure I agree with you, but the use of the word "retard" and its derivatives as not relating to special needs people at all is worth inspection. However, I maintain that its use as a slur is wrong, and given the attitude that many people on this server (including some staff) have towards preventing the use of slurs (apathy and ridicule), I can't think of any other way to prevent it from being used offensively. Should anyone else think of a way, I would most likely be happy to support them.

Eetrab: Google defines obscenity as "offensive or disgusting by accepted standards of morality and decency." I would call the use of this slur offensive and disgusting, even when it isn't deliberate used as a slight toward intellectually disabled people: the point of using it as an insult is that being "a retard" or "retarded" is supposed to be bad because it is associated with harmful (and often untrue) stereotypes about people with autism, Downs, etc. and using it as such implies that those stereotypes are correct.

Voted no on the grounds that I am fully against any kind of censorship and would prefer that there be no swear list at all.

I would encourage you to voice your opinion against folks when they do use a word you don't like. If they want to act like a fool in a public forum, that's their right to do so and it will catch up with them eventually.

Dlgn, if you want a personal echo chamber (since you seem to want to claim anyone who doesn't agree with you must be wrong and/or not reading what you're spewing), go make a Tumblr account and rant and rave about Social Justice all you want in an echo chamber.

Because I say that disagreeing with me is wrong, I must therefore want a "personal echo chamber"? If that was the case, I wouldn't be here anymore.

Activists through the ages have told people that they're wrong for not agreeing with them. It occurred with MLK and the black civil rights and integration movement, for example, and we would probably agree that the people who disagreed with him were wrong.

If you want to actually discuss the issue, please do continue posting, but if you're going to keep complaining about me telling people they're wrong (the horror!) and telling me to go to Tumblr (because being on Tumblr means you're crazy, amirite?), please don't.

This is not an open venue. You are capable of posting wherever you want, I agree. But if you keep responding to every one of my posts that has anything to do with social justice with some variant of "Go back to Tumblr, stupid SJW!" then I think I have the right to request that staff ask you to stop, or (should it get worse) to temporarily forum-ban you. I'm perfectly fine with you contributing to the discussion, but you aren't contributing to the discussion, you're just mocking me and telling me that I'm stupid and overreacting.

I mentioned something about that in my long post that got deleted.

Anyway, when someone is a jerk on MineRealm, one of two things can happen, depending on what exactly they do. Either

1. People tell them to stop because it's not cool, or

2. People think it's funny and don't care, which is the case for the use of the r-word. It's reinforced because so many people don't care about ableism, making MineRealm essentially an echo chamber.

Every time I've called someone out for saying something problematic, Techno's popped in to tell me that equality is stupid and I should go to Tumblr and ignore people saying bad stuff because I'm infringing on their rights to say whatever the hell they want etc. etc.. What's worse, most of the people on the forums (including influential players such as VVolfie) tend to agree with him.

Acting like a jerk isn't the same thing as acting like a fool, because a jerk in a sea of people who agree with him will only get worse. That's why I made this suggestion in the first place.
