I did see the area in which your friend had cut through a public realm and cut a chunk out of an underground room that contained redstone blocks. You're lucky your friend put those back right away or the ban would have happened then. As to your friend being told to sell it back. When I confronted your friend about the room that was taken apart your friend decided to buy the realm right away.
