When I first joined MineRealm, Nobody cared, and I walked 500meters and I could not find public land (and yes I read the signs). I rejoined 8 mouth later by accident due to extreme boredom. I found public land and stayed.

Walking is not hard, but when you don't know where you are going it might be more frustrating.

A spawn with free build in a 100 blocks square radius:
- Imagine if the new players think: "This is the right place to build my house", but yes they will have to find materials.
Spawn would look rather ugly by all the free build.

Have you ever seen the 2.0 spawn? Yeah, it had its faults, but in the ends, was a deeply cared for public project. It was griefed daily, but it was repaired and talked about far more often. It was a source of pride to have done something usefull there, and the memorial wall that I started shortly after joining the server was copied and used from that point on.

Spawn having public land can't make it uglier than it is now.

This ^ yeah spawn looks nice right now, but it looks world edited and it's stale and boring. People build cool things and they get old. Yeah it's awesome to build a giant castle, but in the end it just sits there. Only other thing you find at spawn is flat realms, even more stale and boring. The chaos and mayhem that old spawn brings is just fun.

It also attracts the new guys if they can build right away. No, I'm not saying it's hard to walk... But what's the point of joining a new server and it's all private, stale land? To add insult to injury, as I said earlier - It looks world edited.

I know that the public wheat/ cactus/ tree farm got constantly griefed...
I always fixed it. I had no problem with it.

It's not world-edited--if it looks like it was, then that's a testament to the skill of the builders. I remember when spawn was like that in 3.0, and it was miserable--and I doubt seeing cobble huts and holes to bedrock littering the spawn area seems particularly welcoming to new players.

The bigger problem is the land the newbies are crossing is protected. It can be quite difficult to navigate around everything. And there's nothing like walking 1000 blocks then falling in a three deep hole with no way out.

I'm planning on adding a rail to public land to the Netherrail. The trip would take less than a minute.

Well of course, yeah. The server looks good at first when you join, although it's understandable that people think it's world edited when they first see it. I've never seen another server with flat land that wasn't world edited - So of course people are going to think it is.

Although the spawn was quite ugly, the thing is it was much more enjoyable. New guys could build, and it bring an aspect of survival. Now, the spawn looks amazing... but it's just boring. Walking 1,000 blocks is easy of course, but it's far less appealing then being introduced into a wasteland of cobble with no wood or food for miles, and being forced to survive.

Opposed to the current spawn, where you are introduced into an area full of grass, with no wood for miles, being forced to survive?

It's just boring, in my opinion. New guy: Here's an epic spawn with tons of cool builds... that is totally pointless to me in every way. I've got to walk far away to find wood.

Honestly I'm 50/50; current spawn is awesome, but for the new guys it's important they've got something to hook them and keep interested - honestly a stale spawn where they can't do anything is kind of boring.
