I have come up with an idea to heap new players but it cannot continue without the help of everyone. You dont have to do anything huge just to donate a few things to help new players out.
i have made like a mini helpcenter/supermarket to help new players begin there journey.

i have about 20 dispensers that dispense:
cobble
watermelon
netherrack
stone axe
stone pickaxe
stone sword
torches
crafting table
etc..

I want to make minerealm a awesome place and want new players to stay so any ideas or donations will be greatly appreciated. also if intelli reads this i would like his input for my idea thx :)

You don't think the first person is going to just take all the items from each dispenser leaving none for any of the other new players. Plus, as Mitchie151 said, people should earn what they get on the server and there is no need for any of us to cater for them when they could easily do it themselves.

Make it semi hard to find, and only show the players you think are going to actually play as legit members of the community.

Also take the time to explain on a few signs that all the items are legibly obtained, and no donors or admins can spawn items.

I can see people thinking it's an unlegit server if there are dispensers, even dispensing stone tools.

I think your heart is in a great place :)
I think in practicality everything is just going to get taken by the first person, brand new or not, who comes along.
Also, while I personally feel we should be welcoming and helpful to new players, I feel we do them a diservice by giving them items, leading them to public land, etc.
IMO its part of the fun of the game to start with absolutely nothing and grow from there.
Just my opinion. I really like that you're thinking about ways to help the community, though. :)

The majority of the time the new players are too ignorant to learn how to do anything on their own; ie- Constantly asking where public land is, for teleports, and other questions that are blatantly answered via signs all over spawn. Giving them a little nudge in the right direction and giving them the basic supplies to do so wouldn't hurt.

If you want to provide new players with basic items, the best way to do it would probably be to /spawn and throw some junk at them with you see the "joined for the first time" message.

I think you have a decent idea and I have thought of doing something similar to this too. However, I feel the learning curve of minerealm is just as important as the sense of fun is. I think that most of the people who find it too frustrating to follow simple directions and walk 800-1000 blocks are probably not able to grasp the greater concepts of playing on a legit vanilla-ish server. Also, most of the items you suggest we give them cannot be used within Spawn City limits. They would have to venture off anyways, where they would find the materials to do it themselves.

In agreement with both Mitch and Jenian, I also think that the supplies will get raided quickly. It's cheap materials that most of us could spare, but when the trouble makers all join en masse and are only on our favorite server to eventually get banned, it'll be a waste of resources.

Contrariwise, I think we should all strive harder to assist the new players in other ways. Any newbie who travels all the way out to my realm near Abyssus is welcome to a full set of iron tools, armor, torches, and a stack of Bread or Watermelon.

Maybe instead, you could elect a resource officer that has /home set near spawn who could deliver the goods in person... or even keep the dispensery but redstone the dispensers to be activated with a single lever switch from a secure location so that it all can be dropped by only certain personnel. But that is just my .02 credits.

I think the only realistic way of doing this is providing something that doesn't require anyone handing things out or refilling dispensers. This leaves you with just pumpkins, melons, sugarcane and maybe something else I've forgotten.

Anyway, people have seemed to be able to manage without free handouts until now. The only thing that might be usefull is food so new players are able to sprint their way to public land rather than starving to death (half health) by the time they get there.
