Does anyone know the exact number of sheep I can have before they despawn, and the area that is checked (one chunk? two? more?)? I'm dying for black wool and there aren't really any squids around, so breeding would be nice. Also, any idea as to whether baby sheep are considered separate monsters? I THINK it only despawns mobs that are the same type, correct?

My problem is they despawn after I get a few. I'd like to maximize it, considering it takes 5 minutes to breed (you can shear the babies and then kill them, and you get the same amount of wool). Brutal, but Intelli leaves me no choice

Just breed them like crazy in 1 chunck until they begin de-spawning, then you'll have your magic number.

Anyway, it is 6. And babies count. =/
