I do like the new Nether brick outer bits but the lava would have looked pretty awesome coming down the glass at the same time. Meh maybe i'm just nitpicking because it is a big improvement.

Yep.
Also, it looks alot gloomier then before. The time of day isn't very different, yet there's a huge shadow down the middle of the building (Or is that just some other structure?).

It looks like its just a different lighting setting or something. You can see shadows around the fountain and under the trees, too, in the new one.
