Mushroom blocks are going to be tricky. There are a lot of different blocks depending on what side is red. There is a seperate block for each combination. If you can let me know which kind you need I can get them for you. Here's an example picture. It may look as if some are the same but they are in different stacks because the side you can't see in the thumbnail are different from each other.

I see, that is probably due to java being a weak language and notch being kinda lazy. I'll have to crunch some numbers now to figure out how many of what orientation of blocks I may need. One more question, does the direction I'm facing have any effect on the block's orientation upon placement, like a furnace or chest?

No, I don't think so. I believe there is a seperate block for every combination which does not change depending on how you place it. So if there is a block with the north side made red it will always place the red side on the north no matter which way you're facing.
