EDIT: after doing some tests, it seems that Iron Golems are unwilling to fight me.

First of all: I have no intention of blockading the nether or it's exits, I only want to address the issue before it occurs.

so, I was on the MineCraft forums and I found an interesting little device by Regular Hexahedron:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/729 ... intruders/

Basically, it uses boats or some other similar Entities (read: "groups of Iron Golems") to force players off of the back of a nether portal and into a deadly trap, be it a lava pit, a deadly fall, a pressure plate hooked up to a dispenser, etc, basically, it pushes you to a deathtrap when you appear from a portal.

so, when someone, or as of 12w22a, something appears from your portal, it kills them and either burns or drops their items.

it is totally automated, the only thing is that requires a boat.

so, this seems reasonable on earth, right, they shouldn't be going through your portal and into your base anyway, right?

But in the Nether, they would draw in every portal linking to them, potentially within up to 1024 blocks of range, if all Nether-side portals where deleted and re-built Nether-side, 25 or so portals could blockade all of Minerealm!

What's more, one does not have to even edit a portal to do this, someone could just place the machine around the portal, meaning even the spawn portal is susceptible to this.

Even if Iron Golems are used for the pushing, your armor won't save you, even if you crouch, you can easily be thrown off of a 25 block cliff on THE VERY FIRST ATTACK of the Iron Golem, which you spawn inside of, and cannot break blocks without hitting. As you are being violently forced off of a cliff, you would be shot out the instant it hit you, even harmlessly. getting shot out basically equals falling to your death, the only way to survive would be the use of an Ender pearl, straight down, that is, IF you have enough life left after being hit by the Golem.

One: Is this legal, Earth-side or Nether-side? If so, what are the restrictions.
Two: what are the rules about the spawn portal, I managed to forget them, so I pretty much air on the side of: "don't mess with anything remotely nearby".

Would this even work in MR? I thought boats tend to disappear after sitting around unused for a while.

Additionally, while this could be used to seal off individual portals, it would be unlikely to blockade off the entire nether across MR, even if there was a coordinated effort to do so. Although it is true that portals in the overworld can accept traffic from a wide area in the nether (and vice versa), it would still be possible to build your own portals at specific locations to avoid traps.

Example: you and your neighbor share a nether-side portal at 100, 100. Your neighbor adds a trap to his portal overworld-side at 800, 800. In order to avoid the traps, you could build your own overworld portal at 880, 880, then enter the nether and manually build a portal there at 110, 110; as long as you remember to exit the nether at this portal rather than the one at 100, 100, you will appear in the overworld at the safe 880, 880 portal you built for yourself.

You would have to create quite a deadly trap to stop any player from entering.

A full set of protection IV coupled with fire resistance and health potions (plus FF IV on boots, don't know if it stacks with protection IV) will protect you from pretty much everything. Only thing I see killing someone like that is a very, very high drop, which could actually be combated using ender pearls.

Pretty much what I'm going on about here is you really can't kill a player if they've got enchantments and potions. It's next to impossible.

While it is unlikely for anyone blockade all portals in MR, one could still blockade, say, the spawn portal, and break other nearby ones, any portal within 512 blocks WILL target that one, any portal within 1024 blocks will target either it or another existing, closer target.

Also, building a portal at 880, 880 and entering it would go to an existing portal, as there is almost certainly a nether portal already built between -18,-18 and 228, 228.

certainly blockading exits is not devastating, it is no worse than physically walling them off in terms of the number of exits, but making a sort of auto-camper is devastating to all portals that enter through there.

Yeah, I thought of the Ender pearl thing, not sure if it is possible to use Ender pearls on a drop, as the player might hit first without using multiple Ender pearls.

Also, a 27-block fall will kill any free-falling player, even one with FF (Feather Falling) IV boots. Armor is worthless vs. fall damage.

[quote="Agentred"]A full set of protection IV[quote]

Here are the following protection level damage block rates:
I: 3
II: 5
III: 7
IV: 11

Any sum of these resulting in at least 25 provides the macimum protection, therefore wearing only 1 protection 4 piece and 2 protection 3 pieces will result in maximum damage protection.

Does Protection IV work vs. falls?
also, after doing some tests, Feather Falling protects more than I thought. I only take 2.5-5 hearts when falling 25 blocks.

Yes, I know this, but I still like using the saying 'full set of protection IV' it just simplifies things, really.

False! Protection IV will soak fall damage. There is practically nothing that ignores the protection IV enchantment. Potions, fall damage, suffocating, it's all effected by protection.

It would take little effort to survive the trap if you are expecting it - Take the maximum protection bonus you can get and an enderpearl, and you should be fine.

Interesting, I was under the impression that protection only stopped regular damage, basically, sword hits, etc.
but nonetheless, armor points are still worthless vs. falling.
so, the questions I have are: what fraction of MineRealm has FF, and what fraction has 25 points of protection?

and also, what would it take to even have a chance? does it take FF II? to survive a 40 block fall? or FF IV? Also, how does protection prevent damage (e.g: straight DR, Straight fraction, something else, totally random, etc)

At one point, a big enough fall would kill anyone regardless of the enchantments they've got, although an enderpearl could easily save them. I'd just throw one at the wall as I fall a few times, ensuring that I live - Not sure if I would survive if I threw a pearl straight down, don't know if me or the pearl would hit ground first.
