I have noticed unusual behavior when using lava also. I was placing lava for chandeliers and had to fix the position of said lava flow. This should have been easy but when I removed the lava it did not drop away. Lava seems to take a long time to "cool" and disappear on minerealm. I placed water above the persistent flow to get rid of the lava (and would have to remove the generated cobble as a result). The action created a block of obsidian and a lava source block, an obviously unintentional glich. It took a lot of work to move several of the chandeliers. If I remember correctly, this is when I lost my first silk pick (very sad day).
My suggestion would be to move the lava up one (or two) blocks and use pistons to block the flow of lava in several directions. This should result in the server updating the lava flow as a result of the moved blocks. You may have to play around with blocking the lava from different directions before you find a way that consistently results in the lava re-flowing where you want (think 3-dimentionally, like from above and below).
I hope this helps. Continue to reply to this thread and maybe someone can help you get it working reliably.
