Should there be a completely new server/map for the start of MineRealm 5.0?

I want to bump this. Pictures tell a thousand words!

Not because I want a new map (not happening), because there are alternate solutions, read below

Is there a way to refresh the underground without messing with the buildings above ground? That would be cool, then we wouldn't lose our creative buildings, but would have new grounds to mine that have been untouched? The biggest problem I have had is finding a realm to buy that has relitively un-mined underground. Almost everywhere I have looked is just about mined to death.

Coming from someone who doesn't really know about such things, this would be my choice! :)

I don't think that will happen as people may have buildings underground which would be destroyed. Not to mention the Subway. In the past though, the public realms have been wiped which will replace ores and stuff but only in land which is unowned.

would still screw the subway unless Intelli gave me an account with unlimited funds to go buy up all the subway realms

The problem with a fresh start is if there's ever another update to the map generator to add more items or whatever, we'll be in the same boat again.

Also it's difficult to have a map that clearly has hundreds of thousands of hours of work done on it by thousands of people and then just wipe it all.

I 100% agree with the 'ugly' map issue. While there are some amazing creations on this server, there's also a lot of very disgusting parts - mainly in nature.

It frustrates me to no end that my nice little island realm nestled in a quaint little forest with fantastic views in all 4 directions now looks like this: http://map.minerealm.com/map/#/-3844/64/-1325/-3/0/0
with large vertical drops, swamp biomes, and ugliness running rampant.

Don't even get me started on my nice wood ski lodge that's now smack dab in the middle of another swamp.

Also I've always thought it was a little strange that our realms were 50x50 instead of based on chunks... Maybe they could be 16x16 (1 chunk) or 32x32 (2x2 chunks) or 48x48 (3x3 chunks) so they could be right on chunk borders. And this would be an opportunity to fix that.

I'd love to see a fresh map, even after the hundreds of hours I've put in making nifty things.

Hrm....missed out on most of this discussion, but I've had some thoughts on this. Figure if there is ever a full wipe considered, it's easy to go back and search for opinions.

When the wipe would be announce have a 5 day or so "grace period" then set everything in stone. (i.e. realms owned). This would assume most of the mechanics would stay the same and the map would be approximately the same size.

1) (Not sure if there's a program for this or it's feasible) Offer anybody who had purchased a realm as of the end of the grace period to download their owned realms after the wipe, so you could at least keep them in SP.

2) Multiple spawns brought back with quick transit between them (either dedicated "express" subway line or teleporters for the first few days and for newbies). I was thinking one per quadrant of the map roughly centered in each quadrant. The realm at the center of each would, of course, be under Staff control.

3) Lottery (one entry per realm owned pre-wipe) for the, say, 5 realm x 5 realm around each spawn center. (25 realms each spawn, 100 total) with the caveat that you have to build something that fits in with the layout (so roads are clear and direct) and aesthetically pleasing within 30 days or it's revoked.

4) Anybody who was entered in the lottery, but didn't win, would get one free realm purchase anywhere outside the spawn realms.

5) Keep the wilderness as a border (maybe 500 wide area at every edge of the map) which would be subject to wipes whenever there were substantial changes in the terrain generation or added resources. Nether would be wiped at the same time.

I figure 4 spawns would keep the distribution of players setting up camp spread out a bit more (shorter walks for public land), and keeping them connected quickly would allow groups of new players to meet up (maybe even rotate the spawns each day, so they'll most likely end up in the same place). The core spawn realms would also (maybe) end up with some variety maybe even with a "theme" for each (e.g. medieval stone, aquatic (underwater and glassy), tree/wood based, cartoony (the wool sculptures) or something along those lines). People who don't want to participate in the theme are free to sell their realms to another player (who would stay in theme) and move out of spawn.
