I dont know how many goodbye posts we had in the last month. Dont forget that not everyone who's leaving is making a goodbye post. Probably 100s of active players left.

But Why?
My theories:

1. You are done with Minecraft:
You play minecraft since 2 years, since alpha. You always played on minerealm. You own Millions of credits, realms and items. And Now? There is nothing new to do, no motivation. Why are you still playing this game?

2. Too many new faces:
The first mod i ever saw in chat was s292r. It was in last summer, when i joined the server the first time. I renember many players, and many of them left or were banned later.
Now there are many new players, who joined less than 3 months ago. And these are the most active players.

3. The Minerealm System: $$$
Half of the Spawn realms were empty because players just bought them for profit, most are still empty.
The Credit-System is a long-time motivation? isnt it just boring to mine netherrack for 10 hours, stand in a exp grinder all day long or strip-mine diamonds? - I think it is.
The Community Features are below standard. There is no way to contact offline people (/mail function), there are no community realms. A guild is just a private chat.

I think the first point is the most important - you just get bored if you play minecraft for 1 year.
The Minerealm Concept does not compensate it.

The reason I left was most likely a combination of two and three. The first reason isn't true for me; I've been playing the game since almost the beginning and it has never gotten old. And when I played Minerealm I was always investing and wasting my money on crazy ideas so I was never really rich like all the people who hoarded credits and realms.

This pretty much, maybe if I didn't sell the arena I would still be on, who knows.

I get where this is coming from. I too, feel stagnated with my builds. Thing is, I have no desire to leave or play less. I like the current community, and I like the system. But I agree that more survival is better. No more neutered creepers.

Those that are leaving, requiescat in pace, though I wish it were not so. I miss the days when there were so many people that actually cared about the server, but nothing is permanant, games, even less so. I will stay, likely till the server is shut down. I will stay, because I want the new players to eventually become as we were, intelligent, fun, decent people. I will stay because I want to, but I will still miss those that leave it behind.

I think the absolute biggest problem with MineRealm right now is that there isn't anything to unite the community. There's a thread somewhere talking about our regrettable lack of trolls. Yes, I said "regrettable". Trolls make the community band together, even if only to protect themselves, and to get rid of the troll. There aren't any server-wide projects; the only time I ever see anyone else is when I warp to spawn or trade--the rest of the time, I'm in my mine, because the only way to keep in touch with the community spirit (which is rapidly fading) is in the chat. When I first got to MR...well, I don't remember, but the chat was rich with building discussions, trading, suggestions, jokes, and more. Now the chat pretty much only has a few discussions of random topics. I remember being able to go to spawn city, and see people all over, running from place to place, in the shops, building, trading, fighting, etc. Now I really only see hardcore pvpers and new players. What's happened to us, Minerealm? What has become of us?

Wipe everything. Credits, items, realms absolutely fresh. Make 100x100 spawn PVP free and unable to build there (allowing staff to make it look appealing to the new comers) then let the server be completely vanilla. This will force players to actually work together more, trust each other and essentially bring back some of the excitement that Minerealm doesn't have due to /pvp and realms. Cities will be formed again like 1.0 and 2.0 (to a degree) and the community will then flourish once again.

On a second note, people are always going to come and go. That is the way of a game and essentially life. It not bad, because it means only the true players/members of Minerealm will remain around and they are the players that you want on your server.
