I usually think of a DDoS as drinking too much water while running. Drink it in small amounts over time and you'll be fine and run fine. Drink too much at once, you start to cramp and your stomach hurts. Therefore, you have to let your body recover, much like a server.

A small amount of join requests per minute is fine and the server will run fine. However, hundreds, thousands, millions, billions, trillions, etc., join requests per minute will overload the server and it will shut down.

Just a little cheesy comparison for the non-technical nubs.
