Glitch,
Wall of text, bro. Sorry. I try to find compromise at the end though \/\/\/\/
I like having creepers, zombies, etc. to worry about, but being camped at my city by a person with diamond armor + diamond sword is just obnoxious. Creative is boring in my opinion because there is no survival aspect whatsoever, and not only that, but you don't have to gather resources or actually put work in to make things happen (although granted, it's not that building in creative is a walk in the park either). On the other hand, creative lets you be "creative" without having to worry about creepers or people messing with your stuff (for the most part). Anyways.
Sounds like you'd enjoy being that guy that kills me repeatedly, have fun with that. No, I can't report you for it, but it gets incredibly annoying/frustrating/un-fun for one side of it, and if it's never fun for one side is it really something we should put in the server?
Talked with some people on the server briefly as well, most of them agreed that unrestricted PvP would make them frownyface, but having set areas where it would occur would be alright. I know, that makes it arena-ish and boring if you like causing grief to people, but it's better than every, especially new guys, being killed nonstop.
If someones new to the server and just gets his house camped nonstop, think he's gonna stay with us?
But to take your side of things, I would really enjoy it IF it were between 2 people/groups of people that declared war and only then (there's a thread about it I believe). That would be awesome. Additionally, the use of boundary blocks to restrict/allow PvP would also be favorable. Maybe have it so that spawn as well as major cities would have PvP disabled. That would eliminate a great deal of stress that comes with having PvP enabled, as people would be forced to understand that there are in fact safe havens and they are making a choice to risk their lives (now THATS survival). "But panthers, everyone will flock to cities!" Okay, have a city declare war on that city! Think anyone's gonna feel safe in there? Heck no. Think the city might retaliate and form a militia to restore order? Heck yes. Is that awesome? I think so. "But panthers, what if nobody declares war? Cities will be safe havens of boredom!" Well tough luck then. If they want to play it safe, let them play safe. Give them time to harvest their diamonds so they can be battle ready for when/if a war does come.
PvP can become much more fun once you add some restrictions, because that gives leg-room to make it into something more exciting then just: "Hey, you can kill people at will. Camp their homes, ruin their days, make them quit! But hey, you have fun doing that!" And turns it into: "Hey, out in the forest man, [censored] goes down, you gotta watch your back. Head to the cities if you aren't feeling safe." And then additonally "Crap, they declared war on us. Alright militia, lets do this."
But unrestricted, surprise, troll-tastic, grief-inducing ganks, I'm not feeling it.
