Thanks guys! Now I have two last questions:

1) I thought grass grows on dirt if it is exposed to sunlight. Is this true, or will normal lighting turn dirt into grass?
2) If I place floating dirt, won't it be exposed to light, therefore turning into grass?

Grass will only grow to other adjacent dirt blocks in light; meaning no, light doesn't make grass grow.

This also means that a floating block of dirt, not adjacent to any other grass will never grow grass itself.

Easiest workarounds are to create a staircase and wait, or buy a grass block.

Why would you want grass? Isn't the point not to have it? I have grass blocks, but I don't know why people would use them..

Can you please explain why you would want a grass block? Isn't the point not to have grass, only dirt?
