I had played on this server for several months, from back when it was on the original creative map, up until a month or so ago when I was banned. I recently had a minor revelation and thought I would share. After being banned I had started my own public pure vanilla server (as I had been thinking about doing for quite some time) and that has been its own rewarding experience. I recently banned someone who had been playing on it for about a solid month. This player had been conspiring to detonate large quantities of TNT around the spawn area (he had 16 stacks, legitimately obtained), and I had been onto him for a while, but wanted to see what he would do. Long story short he was banned (and his damage restored) but he lingered on the server's forums afterward. I realized that this lingering was an expression of the success of the server.
I reflected this upon my own experience with Minerealm. Although no longer playing on the server, I still occasionally visit the forums here while I am bored at work. There are places and landmarks on the server that I am familiar with, helped build, or even constructed entirely solo. There are people I remember, people I forgot that I remembered, and people I remember to forget. This server has without a doubt left a lasting impression on me. I am still marginally interested on the larger bullet points of what is happening on the server. To me, that means this server has been a success.
I think that a lot of the frustration and angry posts about downtime and lag and things of the like are fueled by this success. If a server sucked and had these problems, then people would just leave. Because the server is so good, people stay (albeit not patiently), and create these emotionally charged posts.
So next time you see one of those posts, or think about writing one yourself, just remember that if the server was not so awesome then those kinds of posts wouldn't exist.
