I think it's awesome that they're developing an open-source gaming platform. Granted, the actual client is obviously going to be closed-source. Paired with some open hardware (which is expected to be announced in the following days), they're giving Sony/Xbox/Wii/PC gaming a run for their money, which is always good. Between the directions MS has gone toward gaming with windows 8 and the 'Always on kinect' with the XBox One, and Sony with their locking down with hardware, not to mention the rootkit fiasco and the hacking fallout of 2011, a good alternative is needed. All this does is benefit consumers in the long run.
It's a bit like Google fiber taking on the telcos, someone needs to shake up the incumbents, just enough to scare the industry.
