I solved it after like half a dozen tries. I just wired some redstone to a piston and fired it remotely, moving the diamond block and igniting the TNT, but leaving me and the diamond block safe and sound.

Also, it knocked me up to y:470 :o

How to get the diamond ore safely

1. Place dirt blocks around the diamond ore - I'll explain why in a bit.
2. Dig path underground to diamond ore.
3. Dig up diamond ore from underneath, not directly underneath the ore, but one block over so that you're standing under dirt. This prevents sand from falling on you.
4. The dirt blocks you placed will ensure that the diamonds fall down to the tunnel you dug and not on the ground above.
5. ????
6. PROFIT!
