Windows 8 ain't bad. Just buy StartIsBack or similar (about $5) which gives you back the start menu, normal taskbar functionality and allows you to disable the Tiles desktop. I have Win 8 Pro on my new notebook and it performs identically to Windows 7 Pro for my use.

Then why upgrade? For Internet Explorer?

It's better under the hood. I've noticed since upgrading that it is much snappier and a lot more responsive, the Task Manager is godly, it handles crashes a lot better (silently and noticeably faster), it starts up/shuts down faster, it will have support for longer than Windows 7, etc.
