No Muffins
I'm a bit like that except if there's no chips or pizza available.
Clearly not a good enough restaurant!

After a lot of thought, I've come to an uncomfortable conclusion: Derpy's portrayal is ableist.

We have a character who clearly has some sort of mental disability, complete with stereotypical appearance (crossed eyes). What are we expected to do here? We laugh at her disability and the results of it—which, as a person with Visual-Spatial Learning Disorder, I can tell you is very painful when it happens in real life.

What does this mean? Well, it doesn't mean I'm asking you guys to stop watching the show. Most shows have some sort of problematic elements. And I'm not meaning to say that you're all malicious toward disabled people. What I'm saying here is that it's very important to be aware of what you're watching, and that it's encouraging you to do things that could be hurtful.

Thanks for reading.

Bloody hell, you're starting this again? Please, just don't start any more flame wars, let alone on a thread this long and ever-standing. As you've already seen, MineRealm is not the place to bring this stuff as everyone starts fighting. Please, as someone who hates to see these huge fights, just stop.
(Any of you people who like arguing about this, just leave now. Please. I don't want to see such a good, upstanding thread locked by your idiocy.)

I'm not starting any flame wars. I completely peacefully posted my opinion regarding a character of the show, and how her portrayal could hurt people in a way that I personally have been hurt before. I then asked you to consider it yourself. If I posted anything aggressive, please point it out to me. I don't want to flame anyone, I just don't want you to shift from thinking "haha, look at stupid derpy" to "haha, look at that stupid kid with a mental disability"—something that I've unfortunately seen happen (albeit with different shows with similar characters).

I'm trying to avoid aggression, understand, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to point out something like that. What do you want me to do? Not say anything while people get used to laughing at disabled people?

Honestly, I'm disappointed. I was hoping for (and expecting!) a great deal better from MineRealm, and especially from you, Meow. This may be a difficult topic, but that doesn't mean it has to involve flame wars. If we are willing to cooperate in a discussion (which is what I'm trying to do here, by the way), we can breach this important topic without causing any serious trouble.

I'd love a conversation and discussion, but I'm worried that the same people who got your last previous threads such things were posted on locked will strike here. I don't want to see a nice, old, 270-page thread die.

I love this, albeit subtle, Bioshock infinite reference in the latest my little pony episode.
It features the Lutece twins, enjoy.

Spoiler-ized a more in-detailed response; it's not too long, but it's a bit of a rant.
Please respond in a PM if you want to respond to this; I agree with meow, there's no point in dragging this on here.
Spoiler:
Even though this image says all I need to say, I'll add this:
I'm not meaning to say that you're all malicious toward disabled people. What I'm saying here is that it's very important to be aware of what you're watching, and that it's encouraging you to do things that could be hurtful.
Now, I can't agree with that. I'm not going to say disabilities or disorders are funny, they're not, as I have one of my own that's been a very big part of my life. If you want to know what it is you can shoot me PM; I don't feel like telling the world of my problem especially when it's viewed often as a negative thing, at least from 90% of my experiences.

But my point stands in that; If someone finds disabilities or disorders funny (or saying you have a certain disorder makes someone suddenly look at you differently), they are not likely caused by a show. It'd often be caused by some other disorder, or just by a poor upbringing.

So if someone is laughing at the disability, not the joke (if there's a joke), they are likely already aware that they are; and while it's good to point out that they are in the wrong, assuming someone laughing at a joke is laughing at the person making the joke makes a poor assumption.
Honestly, I'm disappointed. I was hoping for (and expecting!) a great deal better from MineRealm...
You are shooting a shotgun into a crowd saying things like that; while you might hit the right person or even people, you'll likely also be hitting a lot of innocent people at the same time.
So in the future please, please pick your targets and send them some PM's instead. If you see someone doing something offensive, tell them directly. There's no point in dragging everyone into the conversation. Especially if it's a "difficult topic".

And thank you for reading as well.
