I think the scariest thing is that MS says they're going to make back the money by the end of the 2015 business year. There's no way they can do that with just game sales.

So, what will it be? Merchandise? Non-free updates? Buy to win? Subscriptions required to play online? Who knows? *shivers*

You're absolutely correct that they won't make back $2.5bn by the end of the 2015 fiscal year, because that isn't what they mean. It has been reported that Microsoft expect the purchase to break-even on a GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) basis. This means only that they expect to make more out of Mojang/Minecraft at $2.5bn purchase value than if they just stuck the $2.5bn in the bank and collected interest.

Have a read of this for further detail:

Just a whole bunch of wishful thinking over here by me, but I just hope that the Minecraft team gains access to more money, resources and workers due to the Microsoft purchase and can use them to make the game better and better through updates, faster than they already do.

Well, that's all they claim to be doing, at least at the moment.

I realized last night when I was in a bookstore with my wife just how big Minecraft has gotten. There was a whole section of Minecraft merch. Legos, toys, all kinds of crap. Minecraft has entered the phase where its value is far beyond the game itself as it appeals to a broad age range and has real world possibilities. This doesn't happen very often.
