Well, I will not argue about page files and traditional drives. I personally don't think they belong on a SSD. I do agree you will get a performance increase by putting the page file on an SSD though.

One other thing I thought of, concerning SSDs, is that you must buy a SLC type. Resist the urge to buy a MLC version in order to save money or afford a bigger drive. They don't last as long and are cheaper quality (has to do with how the data is written to the drive). Also, IO/s is very important and can vary greatly per drive. I know there is rule of thumb when pairing IO/s to drive interfaces (SATA II vs. SATAIII), but I don't know much about that. Try to get one that supports SATA 3 (6GB/s).

In fact, most people seem to think having the page file on the SSD improves performance (if you're paging).

Most of the arguments hover around the amount of space it uses. BTW, I found a 120GB SSD just too small for Win7 and the stuff I do. I've been happy with a >200GB drive. If you're doing crazy video editing, you're going to need a regular hard drive (or a lot of cash).

One thing you could do is probably double your memory to 16 GB. That would certainly reduce paging, and I would move up to 16GB (I currently run 8GB) if I were building a computer today.

I agree with Technoprodigy: there is nothing you can do today that will change your experience more than an SSD.

I'm not up-to-date with motherboards, so I wouldn't want to recommend anything. You'll have to do that research yourself.
Putting your page file on your SSD will make it wear out faster. Don't be silly, the location of your page file will yield no benefit in performance. Also, NEVER EVER EVER EVER defragment an SSD as that will also severely wear out your drive. That, and SSD's do not succumb to nearly as much degradation in performance as HDD's, so defragging is almost pointless.

SSD Intel or Samsung. When installing windows 7/8 it pretty well sets it up to work with the SSD. You may have to do a few minor changes. Google can help there.

I picked up a Samsung 840 240gig SSD for a good price and so far its working good on my old motherboard.

Also get a HD as well if you have videos music and such since you want to keep only the programs you use the most on the SSD. As well if using some all in one programs you may have to go into them and disable their defrag option as well. I know with Norton 360 I had to do that as it was auto set to run.

First, I was going to suggest a video card from XFX. They are guaranteed for life. Unfortunately, they don't have very many offerings with nVIDIA chipsets.

Second, while SSD are great, they are no substitute for a traditional hard drive. All modern OS have page files and/or swap partitions. These will kill an SSD no matter how good or new it is. Your options are to disable this (which I don't think you can do with UNIX and prob. not with Window 7/8). The drive you suggested is fine. However, I highly suggest you augment it with an SSD if you have the money. I hear they are amazing.

If I have any other suggestions I will let you know.
PS: try mint instead of windows, you may like it.
Mint is certainly decent, but Linux is not something one should get into for the wrong reasons. I would imagine he is building this rig with gaming in mind and no Linux distro is even close to feeding that type of user.

As for this odd discussion on page files do not worry about it... you cannot trust what you read on some "tech" page. Page file wear on SSD's is a myth, even if it was not for the fact that modern OS's already alter their settings to be optimal for SSD's, the wear of the page file is minuscule compared to general wear. You should not even worry about general wear since you will be replacing your computer hardware long before that SSD dies.

Now that being said... Pagefiles are left over from when the most amount of RAM you could get was 16MB and was absolutely necessary to avoid overflow. Not that any of you kids would remember the days... but I remember overflowing a text documents, which subsequently required increasing the pagefile. These days your computer has more RAM then it really knows what to do with so it will hold unto useless data it does not even need.

TL;DR: You can ignore everything previously said about pagefiles since they are irrelevant. If you have money to burn on SSD just go for it... the are not as unreliably as they used to be.

ok thanks for clearing that up for me. I was most likely going to go with the hard drive that i have selected, mostly because i'm a little more comfortable with them. thanks :)

ok thanks you guys for all the help! if you have any more suggestions, they are greatly appreciated.

I did end up having to change the processor to the 3570k, since the sockets didnt match up with the motherboard.

and so far im sticking with the original hard drive.
