That will only help if it's overheating. If it's a laptop, be very careful when taking it apart and keep track of any and all screws while doing so.

What operating system are you running? Windows 8? Windows 7? Mac OS X? Debian? Ubuntu? Solaris? DOS? Windows Vista?

Are you talking about in the Minecraft client? What you described sounds like it might be your graphics card overheating or bugging out.

Update Java and make sure you are running the proper version. For example if you are running Windows 7 64bit you will need to be running the latest 64bit version of Java. I've seen these symptoms with the 32bit Java client and Minecraft before.
