The root of communism's problems aren't complicated. The ideology behind communism is great in itself, but it fails because of human nature's evils. We're greedy. If an elite few are given authority over all of the power and resources in a society, it's inevitable that corruption is going to happen eventually. Even Mikhail Gorbachev, who led the Soviet Union in it's last years knew that it wouldn't work any longer. Why do you think he pulled the plug? I mean, every communist society to exist has failed, and considering that humanity hasn't been showing any signs of getting any less screwed up in the past few decades, I doubt we'll ever be at a point where we can actually sustain a communist society in the future without it failing too.

Might I recommend making a sort of "Random" topic in chat where these things can be continued?
Maybe call it "Serious discussions" or "Off-Topic" or something and have these kinds of discussions there?
Seems like a lot of people like jumping in on the random topics and/or need to get things off their chest and that seems like the best way to do it. At least until it gets locked from flaming or inapproprate things. Again.

Let me know if I'm in the wrong here, but there has to be better ways than getting everything so out of control it gets locked again and again.

assuming people will act with the same motivations in a communist or socialist society as a capitalist one because of "human nature" is no way to start an accurate analysis.

The roots of communism's failures are as complicated as the globalizing society that created them, which is pretty darn complicated. In any case, the fact that you can point to failed "communist" societies (which weren't actually communist, anyway, since the means of production weren't owned by the proletariat) demonstrates merely that communism didn't succeed in that case. It's equally possible to point to failed capitalist societies, but the difference is that communist countries, unlike capitalist ones, are a threat to the global capitalist system, hence the Red Scare whose effects endure even today.

But most of all, you don't seem to know what communism actually is. An "elite few" having control is the exact opposite of communism, and the fact that you don't realize that shows how poorly people are educated about political systems in this country.

EDIT: Life, I'd normally agree with you, but this is an explicitly political thread anyway, so I don't see the harm in discussing politics as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

I agree. I was responding to the "If we're getting this locked" bit and more in general then just this thread. Talking politics on politics is fine, but lets avoid getting things locked for the sake of getting things locked, yeah?
