On my single player world, I made a fortress. It is made of a ton of random blocks, with the main area as a hollow pyramid of iron and gold blocks. The entire thing is coated with a layer of obsidian to make it blast proof. I have already installed some traps/mechanisms:
1. To enter, one must walk through a long pathway that is 2x2 blocks. When I flip a lever in the pyramid, pistons push out blocks and cover up the passageway.
Pros: Keeps out enemies, Invisible
Cons: None
2. After the first trap, I have a bunch of tripwire layed out. When someone steps on it, the tripwire activates a series of noteblocks, as an alarm.
Pros: Alerts me of approaching threats
Cons: Easy to see, not too useful when volume is turned off
3. After the tripwire, you are in another hallway. This hallway has 4 traps 1: In the hallway, the floor is covered with stone pressure plates when you step on these, it activates pistons in the roof, that block off your escape.
Pros: Good for trapping people
Cons: An enderpearl can be used to escape
4. The trap above serves the purpose of locking people in front of my dispensers, which are hooked up to a clock in my house, to blast enemies with arrows
Pros: Can shoot 9 stacks of arrows into an enemy
Cons: Fully Manual
5. Right across from the dispensers that shoot arrows, there is a row of dispensers that can put out a line of lava. The arrow dispensers will knock people into the lava.
Pros: Lights people on fire easily
Cons: With fire resistance on, someone could sit in the lava to hide from the arrows.
6. In that same hallway, pistons can open a 2x2 door, releasing a swarm of mobs from inside of a box.
Pros: Mobs can kill people for me
Cons: Due to redstone space, only silverfish, bats, and chickens can fit through. The mobs are also vulnerable to my traps.
7. To enter the house from the hallway with the 4 traps, there are two iron doors.
Pros: Iron doors are easy, and don't take up space
Cons: Easy for someone to place a lever on the ground to open up the door
8. Behind the doors, two pistons push brick blocks up out of the ground
Pros: Cannot be easily overridden by someone else's levers/redstone
Cons: One could enderpearl through
9. My W.M.D. It is activated by deactivating the safety lever in the back of the machine, and then pressing the button on the front. It blows up a large area (Many stacks of TNT) around my base.
Pros: Good for a last resort, would be awesome to watch
Cons: 1 time use, possibly dangerous to base.
10. Railway. If you open a piston door inside of the pyramid, it lets you into a little room with a railway for going out and a railway for going in. When you press a button next to the 'out' railway, a dispenser places a minecart on the tracks. When you get in the minecart, just move forward, and you will activate a detector rail, which puts you onto some powered rail, and you exit just as pistons are closing behind you to seal the entrance. The railway rides around in a loop around the base, and to go back in, it activates a detector rail, which opens a piston door for a split second. This door can be locked from the inside, to prevent an enemy from riding their cart straight into the base.
Pros: Secure, with 2 locked piston doors, and fun to use
Cons: The base stays unattended while you are on the track.
11. In the rear of the base, there are a couple stone pressure plates that activate 8 sticky pistons, for a double thick 2x2 piston door. The door can be locked with 2 levers.
Pros: An easy way out of the base
Cons: Someone could enderpearl in while you are exiting.
12. Surrounding the pyramid is a 3 block wide 1 block deep lava moat.
Pros: Good for keeping mobs away
Cons: Players would never really fall in by accident
13. Since the piston backdoor opens right into the lava moat, there is also a 3x2 drawbride to cross it. The pistons are hidden underground and the glowstone is invisible under the lava.
Pros: Cool and fun
Cons: No way to close it from the outside after you walk over it
14. In the middle of the base, there is a ladder surrounded in glowstone that leads up to the sniping tower. A 2x1 piston door is activated by a pressure plate from the inside to enter. The door can be locked, and there is no way in from the outside.
Pros: Easy to get up the ladder
Cons: No way to get back inside the base from the ladder
15. The sniping tower is a big glass room, with 4 porches, with 1 brick slab so it is impossible to fall out, and the rest is open air for firing arrows.
Pros: Good for sniping campers outside the base
Cons: Easy for someone to enderpearl in, which is why the ladder up to the tower is only 1 way, so that intruders cannot get into the main base.
16. Above the sniping area, is a bedrock box with fire on the roof. This is the safe house. Once you get in, you can use the lava in the chest to burn the ladder used to climb up, and cover the hole with obsidian.
Pros: Good for hiding
Cons: Boring

Well, that is my very long description of the base. Please suggest improvements of the mechanisms if you can, or suggest completely new traps/devices. Furthermore, it would be great if I could somehow upload this so that you guys could download it and see it for yourselves.

Your two options are to A. hide your trap so well that nobody would think to dig/look for redstone to break, or B. play on a server that allows PvP as well as having grief protection. My old server was like this, so booby trapping your base was quite useful if you were good at it.
