Hey, it's not a bad idea... but if something like this is designed, I think it should be a player-run competition where bets and donations provide the prize money, rather than a server-run competition where credits are generated from nothingness to provide prizes. Spectators could be allowed to watch, possibly for a small fee that is added to the prize money.
Not particularly interested in organizing anything of the sort, but in case anyone else wants to do it, here are some ideas for details for the challenges:
Climbing--several walls are covered in identical patterns of ladders, and one player on each wall races to beat the competition to the top. Like a maze, but vertical--with the risk of falling (either to your death, or to a lower point on the wall) if you slip. Audience members with a clearer view of the complete wall can optionally offer helpful (or harmful!) advice about which way to go.
Archery (I assume this is what was meant by "arching")--Two players with bows stand together in a small area with PVP on. They each have a target--two volunteer pincushions with PVP on--that they shoot at. The targets walk back and forth along a path some horizontal and vertical distance from the shooters' box. Shooting the other competitor is a DQ, shooting the other competitor's target is ok but helps the opponent, and the first person to have their target killed is the winner.
Alternatively, put two players in minecarts on parallel tracks, with slanted power rails set up to make the players go back and forth along the same length of track; players shoot at each other, and the last one alive wins but leaving the cart is a DQ.
Surviving--Not particularly difficult in general, so to make it more difficult, the players will be stripped of all inventory items and locked in a dark room with a zombie spawner. Last one alive wins (and is allowed to leave the room). Alternatively--could do something like the "hunger games" arena that was being planned in another thread.
Other ideas:
Boat Racing--Multiple players race boats around a designated track (marked by solid blocks on the edges). To increase the challenge, water currents could be added to the course. For optional Mario Kart style fighting, players could have PVP on and be equipped with bows (no arrows), and have a few arrows at a time dropped in designated areas of the course.
Mob Killing Competition--Players go to a dark wilderness area at night, all equipped with the same food/items, and all starting with no experience points. Whoever has the most experience points by sunrise wins. Death = DQ.
Sumo Wrestling--Players are equipped with wood or stone knockback swords, and are placed in a small round arena surrounded by lava (or, alternatively, high in the air). Last one alive wins. More players and/or smaller arena = more chaos.
Footrace--Players are allowed to bring whatever food and speed potions they want, and the race is from one X/Z coordinate to another, with no exact path specified, but /spawn, /home, and nether portal use are all DQs. Could be done in either an urban area (where prior knowledge of the city's layout is important for choosing the best path) or a wilderness area (where the ability to adapt to hills, valleys, and cliffs is most important).
The Greymarch has ended.
