So I got this idea reading one of TornadicManiac's post about how he races cars and I thought it would be pretty sweet to have a public race track to hold competitions at or maybe more of a drag strip. It could be pretty awesome with some tricky redstone wiring involved. I was thinking 2 side by side tracks with a piston light (colored blocks) to tell the drivers when to go (red, yellow, green wool. Like a stop light) and if someone starts too early they are disqualified noted by a redstone torch indicator or some other form of indicator. Possibly even a power cutoff from that tracks booster rails. Then at the end of the strip have detector rails to show who finished first. It was just a thought and I was curious what you guys would think of this.

Also maybe a full circuit race track that works kinda like a relay race. You would hit certain check points and have to take off again. The winner would be whoever can transfer the relay check points the fastest.
Open to ideas and suggestions maybe we can get something like this going!

Would take some medium sized but tricky redstone wiring, but would be pretty cool. I'm sure there are a few people that could do this. I think this would be a good idea! :)

Maybe instead of minecarts it could be water-based and use boats? You lose the benefit of having detector rails to show who wins in a close finish, but it might be more fun since there would be more opportunities to manually control the vehicle rather than moving along a preset path.

But would they break apart if they made contact? I guess that could just cause a double-disqualification. :P I like the idea of it being more on manual control. Makes it more on your decisions in moving it.

The boat version of this idea sounds fun, with less work involved. There should be a huge course in the middle of Greater Findale Ocean.

Pressure pads can work like detector rails.

I just bought 3 adjacent realms in a pretty easy to flatten area. It is pretty far from spawn (x=2600ish) but the subway does go almost all the way out there and I was planning on starting my own subway station near it. The subway looks as though it will go right by it since Sir_Dave88 has a station already built on that axis with plans on connecting to his.

To introduce an element of skill into the game, simple redstone circuits could be used to give advantages to players who use them or disadvantages to their competitors.

Example A (minecart race):
Players enter a three-way intersection. The two pathways other than the one from which they enter both allow the players to continue the race, but one is shorter than the other. By default, players entering the intersection automatically head off to the longer path, but a button on the wall connected to the intersection rail makes it possible for a well-timed push of the button to briefly change the intersection and send the player to the shorter path, allowing for a faster time.

Example B (minecart race):
A short stretch of track (probably going downhill, to prevent players from getting too badly stuck) consists of power rails. A redstone line to provide power to the rails runs between two levers, one right before that stretch of track and one right after it. In order to get through unhindered, players may need to hit the first lever in order to turn the rails on. They then have the option to try hitting the second lever (once they're through) in order to turn the rails off again--this would slow down players behind you, unless they manage to hit the first switch as they go through.

Example C (boat race):
A pillar in the middle of the waterway has a lever attached to it. Pulling the lever activates pistons above the water, located just behind the pillar, causing them to push downwards and block boat travel underneath them. This hinders players behind the one who pulled the lever--they must either go around the piston obstruction or pull the lever again to raise the pistons.

Example D (boat race):
A pillar in the middle of the waterway has a button attached to it. Pressing the button momentarily activates pistons above the water, located slightly ahead of the pillar. The pistons push downwardsfor a brief time, blocking off the waterway for players at that part of the race-the player who used the button then has an opportunity to catch up.
