Would it be possible to make tall grass drop all kinds of seeds for now?
Seeing we have no means of getting melon or pumkin seeds without a map update, and that might take a while.
Giving tall grass a small chance of dropping all seeds, at a low rate would be a 'normal' way to get pumkins and melons?

The only way this would be implemented is if it's in the vanilla game. I have no idea if it is, but if not, you'll just have to go dungeon-scrounging like the rest of us. The map is huge, and I can promise you there are unrendered chunks with a dungeon or two in them.[*]

There is no way to get the seeds currently. They are only to be found in abandoned mineshafts, and they're a 1.8 terrain feature, and we have a 1.7 terrain. This was only a temp solution.

No, the map is not completely rendered. The unrendered bits will be loaded with the 1.8 terrain generator when one walks across them.
