I keep seperate installation folders for my modded versions of minecraft. On this server I use a clean install without so much as a texture pack.

Every day I see at least a dozen people in chat begging for help with this issue as well; it is a common issue on this server. If you don't believe me just ask about it in chat during a peak hours.

I'm certain it isn't client-side do to observed differences in /home and /spawn. I live FAR from other players and rarely come to spawn. As such, I am far more likely to have a copy of my area loaded into memory than the server. The server is far more likely (almost required) to keep spawn loaded at all times. If the problem were client-side I would expect to have issues when teleporting to spawn as often if not more-so than teleporting home. This is exactly the opposite of the observations: myself and many other players always have issues going home and never have issues going to spawn.

I had minor issues with my /home command for a short time because I had it set in the basement of one of my homes (only about a 4 block vertical height to warp into). I went outside to the front door and into open space and re-set my /home. No problems since.

Also, I've never had any issue with /spawn.

This works perfectly for me:

And the same problem will keep happening. Find a medium sized area, where not a lot of chunks need to load. Then, create a block ladder two blocks high and type /sethome. Then remove the two blocks, so when you spawn you fall 2 blcoks, giving the chunks time to load, and ample room for you two spawn. Doing this fixed the problem for me.

Sometimes if I go offline anywhere when I come on later I am 5 blocks higher. I also have issues with /spawn because half my body spawns in the floor. If I /spawn again I take a half heart of damage but I am above ground.
The /home is easy to correct. Don't /sethome on the ground. Go 2 blocks up then /sethome then break the 2 blocks then /home. For me it works every time. Maybe a sign at spawn would explain this to players so they don't have a problem.

As for the /spawn thing is it because people will port but stand where the /spawn point is? I have yet to die from this but eventually it is bound to happen.

I'm familiar with this problem. I experience it very often, yet it differs depending on my /home location. Usually I will take damage if the chunks don't load quickly enough. However, re-logging back into the game fixes the problem for me.

I'm had this problem a bit over the summer. I suspect it's at least partly because I'm currently using a wireless connection of less than stellar reliability, but if other people are also affected, maybe there's something more going on. Having a system to pre-load a /home chunk before teleporting would be helpful, but if that doesn't happen, I found that it's improved if you set yourself to spawn a little bit off the ground (put dirt where you want to spawn, stand on dirt, type /sethome, remove dirt).
