Hello everyone!
I'm sure most of you have heard of TeamSpeak 3, but if you haven't, here is a brief overview:
TeamSpeak is a group conference calling software, often used by gaming guilds and servers for its simplicity. It allows anybody with the IP and password to join.
TS3 has been suggested for MineRealm before, and many players have attempted to run their own. I suggest that MineRealm creates an official TeamSpeak server. This would open up a lot of options for the server, as well as a few potential donor benefits.
I've seen the servers ran in many different ways before. The most unique, and efficient way I have seen involved a random URL generator that gave you a unique join IP, meaning that your in game name could be synchronized to the server. I think that having this synchronization is incredibly important, as we don't want banned players to be able to talk here. Or perhaps, we could divert banned players into an appeals channel (which would be a nightmare IMO).
With a free license, MineRealm would be able to host a server with an infinite amount of channels. Perhaps, donors would have the permission to set up their own private channels for their friends; perhaps events could be given their own channels. Perhaps the top 10 guilds could have channels? The possibilities are near endless. Giving players channels for their friends would be a very exclusive privilege, reserved for the most elite. I think this would be a unique aspect, but I wouldn’t want this to reduce the amount of people speaking in the public chat.
As far as I know, MineRealm is now only utilizing one of its servers, unless one of them has been dedicated to running the main world…. Regardless, I think MR easily has the resources, and a TeamSpeak server is something every good community should have. Additionally, a very good way to give new players help would be for them to be automatically put into a newbie channel group while they are still new, and there would be at least one veteran/staff member here at all times (hopefully).
Generally speaking, I think there would be very little problems with this, if it is executed correctly. A system synchronizing our in game names to the TeamSpeak server would be somewhat necessary, although there could be a ‘guest channel’ for people who have not linked their account. Of course, this could be bad, because unwanted people may join, although moderators could quite easily ban them. All the relevant server rules would apply to the TeamSpeak server.
Pros:
1. Awesome community tool which allows people to talk to each other in real-life unlike ever before.
2. A safe community wide replacement for Skype that allows the server to manage who can talk.
3. There is so much goodness I can’t actually state all of it (and I’m terrible at pros/cons)
Cons:
1. If not set up correctly it could allow banned players to freely communicate, similar to the old web chat if you can remember that.
2. Could require quite a lot of work to set up, synchronizing IGN’s to TS could be difficult, but I HAVE seen it done several times.
Feel free to throw in your own ideas for a TS server here.
*note* TS3 is far superior to other similar communication platforms, Ventrilo and mumble both use less simple and streamlined GUI’s and are more difficult to manage from a server admins point of view. TS3 also supports plugins and skins, and it might be fun to create a MineRealm skin if a server does get created.
