Option 1 for me. But if we were to have that we need the subway seen to more often. I turn away from using the subway because:
1 It's extremely laggy (not much we can do about that)
2 It's slow
3 Sometimes parts of the track are griefed
Yeah that's my view.

I chose Option 4 to keep the Nether as it is, but if you wanted to deter the use of nether for fast travel you could just add a 10% to 25% chance that when you use a portal you come out the one entered as in Option 1. Maybe even a small chance that it just exits you at a random portal anywhere on the map, and since there are hundreds of nether portals the random portal couldn't be abused to get you where you wanted.

Pop into the nether, pop out.
Check coords. If close enough, head out. If not, repeat process.

...Why is this even an issue?

If it's changed around, nobody will use the Nether for anything other than murdering people in PvP. Nether farms will be unfindable, travel will be impossible, and people will more than likely get ticked when they want to do anything remotely related to the Nether.

Yes, but there are 921 exit portals according to the map and possibly only a small chance of randomizing. It would take longer to abuse it than just walking.

It's not dangerous currently.
I was constantly telling people the same thing, and then Spritzo started sniping me from god-knows-where today. The nether is mostly-safe to the wary, and really needs no changes.

As for surface exploration...I used to do a lot of that before I lived in an ocean. Now I have explored very scrap of land near me, so I do more building. If I can't find niftiness, then I shall make it for others to find! Muwahahahaha!

Though seriously, exploration of a blank countryside can only hold your attention for so long. The nether gives you a faster way to travel once the wilderness becomes mundane.

As for making the nether dangerous...(you won't like this idea)...allowing griefing in the nether would solve that problem. First the roads and portals would get anhilated. Shortly thereafter, people would start trapping portals and building whatever deathtraps they can imagine. A lack of usable roads and safe portals would force people to find their own routes, making hunting interesting again. New roads would get built, but real battles to defend them would ensue. Just maintaining a bridge could turn into a combat-op. With renewed pvp and the dangers of crossing the real nether (not those !@#$ roads), even salty veterans would have to start thinking about whether the nether is the easy option.

That's absolutely horrible! Everything will be utterly destroyed, everybody will be killed over and over again, and the entire nether will be plunged into chaos!

...I like it.

Nether is easily the worst element of this game, I'd be happy with it removed completely.

Might as well leave it as-is though because people will complain regardless...

Reset the Nether at random intervals with no notice and with Glowstone. Reset the End at the same time. If may not make Nether travel anymore dangerous than it already is but atleast it will be more fun.

I often wonder how many new people simply decide to find another server once they sign in and find no public land anywhere near spawn, a cleared out Nether, and no hopes of returning from the End. All important and fun aspects of the game.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a stat or a special award for the slayer of the Minerealm dragon(s)? Off topic I know but since I have the big guys ear...

Would it be possible to add artificial hazards, like increasing the ghast spawn rate near players bit a solid bit? Or perhaps having a script that randomly resets chunks of the nether every now and then, or perhaps swaps one chunk of the nether for another? That way tunnels would get chopped apart and following a path would be harder. Full nether resets might be too much since some people do have bases buried in it.

Perhaps if people got a bounty for killing others in the nether it might encourage banditry and other pvp and make the nether less safe in general?

Removing it entirely would get rid of resources needed for quite a few things, which seems a bit too extreme.

Current nether with perhaps a few tweaks seems like the best option.
