The thing is, you can't actually tell if it was portal camping or not. If beast had been sitting there waiting, then yes, but if he had just moved into the portal room then it isn't camping. You would need to know what he was doing prior to his kill as well. Unless by "portal camp" they mean "any pvp in sight of a portal" which would not actually be camping...

It was supposed to be a glorious, primal, brutal good time. There were no rules, there was none of this "unarmed" bullshit, there were no damn roads that gave people the sense that they were "entitled" to safely prance through the Nether with all their stacks of diamonds and wheat and iron. I also remember that if someone had been idiotic enough to build, of all things, a freaking SHOP in the Nether it would have been A.) Torn to Pieces, or B.) Instantly Robbed and Lava'd. Portal Camping? Ha, that was a fact of life. If an enemy found your portal and were willing to wait there tough, you were in for it. You needed to move and make a new portal far enough away to ambush them. Hell, I CLEARLY remember being portal camped by all the members of Larryland before their bannings. And you know what? I didn't complain. Nobody would have even though of complaining. You know why? There was no concept of order or civility in the nether, it was Hell for Heavens sake!!! You're already damned by being there, might as well have fun with it. And you know what? We did. We ALL did. The "noobiest" of "noob" to the oldest of players loved running into the Nether to mine glowstone or Netherack, and if they got killed doing so they yelled a bit but they didn't make a huge fuss over it that caused SERVER-WIDE FACTION DIVIDES.
A perfectly good point. I haven't been here since "the start of the server" but I've been around since mid-to-late last summer, and I remember what the Nether was like then. The majority of the glowstone was gone by the time I arrived, so most people in the Nether were having a 1v1 fight or just passing through to another portal. I got killed many times there, killed many people there, and even snuck up on a 1v1 fight and managed to kill both combatants. Usually, a death in the Nether brought about no reaction at all from the dearly departed, and even when someone did get upset it resulted in a chat-box ragefest that lasted about 15 seconds.

I liked the Nether that way, I really did. The danger inherent in every single cubic meter of the Nether made it FUN. Minecraft isn't a particularly difficult game, so to face the possibility of death coming out of anywhere at any time for no reason at all added some welcome suspense to the game.

I still liked the Nether when rules were first introduced. The majority of the Nether was still appropriately dangerous and chaotic, but it was easier to get from one portal to another, which was kind of nice. But now, with different players and factions arguing over technicalities of rules that aren't concretely defined, it's just annoying. I don't mind having rules, but they should be well-defined before they're enforced with bans.

IN BRIEF:
Crazy dangerous Nether with no rules whatsoever = GOOD and FUN
Rule-protected Nether with clearly defined and consistently enforced rules = ALSO GOOD
Semi-rule-protected Nether with vaguely or unofficially defined rules that are enforced sporadically = BAD

According to Kerovon that would be portal camping:
kerovon wrote: It looks like the issues here did come up over confusion about the rules. There are two basic facts that are at play here.

1) Portal camping has been decreed, by Intelli, to be against the rules if it is around any portal connecting near a spawn, or any portal that you did not make yourself, as posted here.

2) Due to this being announced inside another thread, some people may not have seen this post. Additionally, may people have given different takes on what they think the rule is, some accurate, and some inaccurate. This further caused confusion.

Because of the confusion, I am going to unban kylefate. However, portal camping is still against the rules. I consider portal camping to be killing someone in the area immediately around a portal. I make no distinction in in you have been sitting at it long term, or if you just arrived. Killing people in the zone immediately around it is considered camping, and is a bannable offense.

I will be working on getting a post up this weekend to try to help ameliorate some of the rule confusion. Until then, rely on the definition of portal camping that I just posted.

Also, Ramien is a winner.

Rules in the nether would be vague, badly defined and therefor abused (like they are now). The easiest rules would be no rules.

BSGSamuel, if you look at the time stamps, you will realize that I made my post before kero made his post. Beyond that, my post still stands completely correct. You apparently didn't notice the 2nd half of it which covered the possibility of any pvp near a portal being considered portal camping rather than actually camping there. My apologies for pointing out that you failed at reading comprehension twice in a row, but such a public embarrassment should be obvious to anyone reading closely.

Yes because everyone checks out timestamps, in different threads mind you, to see who posted what first before they make a reply.

Grow up.
