This serves more on the purpose of a minor convenience. As Rokkr already stated, if you know the rules, then you can probably take a gander at what you did wrong (this also leads to confessions to things that people weren't originally banned for such as using x-ray when the ban reason was griefing). In the case that one's account has been banned due to the actions of his/her "sibling/friend," the banned user would not know what exactly was done wrong. Even still, this can all be handled in a simple asking of what rule(s) was broken when that player appeals.
