Well 400x400 is next to impossible for most people, so it doesn't matter anyway (though maybe it should only be the biggest realms that get them?)

Yeah that would work pretty well. Maybe instead of every 100, it starts at 150 and it goes every 50x50

I think colonies, much like war, should largely be handled by the players and not by some plugin. A colony should be a separate, yet somewhat dependent entity of the original realm. And should that colony grow to a sufficient size, it should be able to break ties with the original if it wishes. Basically, all of this can be implemented right now without the need of a plugin. And let's be honest, the only realms that should utilize colonies are the big ones. If a smaller realm wanted a colony, it would most likely take away from the original's workforce and hamper growth. The larger realms don't really need to worry about this as much since they take up about as much space as they can hope to with the original realm.

The only thing I can think of that would require some kind of programming is a tweak to the existing realm plugin. If you wanted colony members to still be able to build in the original realm, you would need to be able to add special permission (something along the lines of what has been suggested here http://minerealm.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=514 and/or here http://minerealm.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=575).

And if you want the colony's block count to be added to the original's in some way, you're being too greedy. We can always have a page in the forums listing Realms and their colonial ties. :P

But that's just my hurried opinion. :)

But still, this colony idea is GREAT, maybe even AWESOME or possibly EPIC. I really hope this is put into the server.

My idea of colonies is basically once you get to a big size, you can expand your realm in a totally different area of the map, with different landscape, etc. I still think if you build in the colony, it would expand, and if you build in the realm, it would expand. I love this idea, it puts a kind of castle with villages into the game. Having separate realms with ties to each other would make one realm probably desire for independence and would soon break off. I think that if we did just try to keep separate realms without a plugin, it just wouldn't work.

The thing is, however, that you're not describing anything that requires a plugin. You want the colony to be in a totally different area of the map, which you can do now (send some members to establish it). You want the colony and the realm to expand independently, which you can do now. You want them to have ties to each other, which is possible now (where do you think building supplies will come from?). You want the colony to be able to attain independence, which you can do now (just say the word, take a vote, what-have-you).

I'm not just trying to dump on your plugin idea. I like the colonies concept. It just doesn't seem to me that you've shown where the need for the plugin is.

It would be a lot more controlled. If someone wants both realm and colony to be private, realm members won't be able to build in the colony, and won't have any permissions. I was wanting to make Ebonywood a main city, with housing in another colony, but without the plugin, that can't happen. Still voting for this to be implemented.

PS: I don't want the colonies to get independence.

Maybe it could be something like mercantilism. You establish a colony and you get a share of the blocks that the colony gets, but not all. The colony needs to have blocks to expand too. But because of this, the colony would have to expand at a lot less blocks than the realm.
