If you plan on doing this, at least put 500 credits worth in.
Yeah, you don't have to make EVERYTHING in the chests valuable stuff, just throw some valuable stuff in there if you can't afford to make it all valuable. The fun in "Sealed Chest Auctions" is that people don't know what is in the chest. But don't put useless stuff, or you lose your bidder base. The more valuable the stuff inside is, though, the higher you might want to set opening bid at. I started mine at 1.75k, but no one was paying attention since they were focused on other stuff. Called in a special person to place some bids, *cough shamp cough* and once one bid came in, people were bidding, quickly raising the bid to 4k. Then ImUr made a very generous contribution lol.

This relates to my idea very well. See, yesterday I had an overstock of potions, so I took a ton of random ones, stuffed 'em in a small chest, and held a "Sealed Chest Auction" on the border of my realm. Once the bidding began, it escalated all the way up to 10.5K, and there's where it stopped. I made 10k credits from a ton of random potions. I theorize you could basically put anything into the chest, even auction a thing of dirt, although auctioning crappy stuff will most likely end the auctions since no one will trust anything. The idea behind this is for all the bidder knows, there are a crapton of high level weapons, or rare materials, or whatever. Then, you can make money and people can use the things they win. You don't even necessarily need to put useful things at all, but once again, it will ruin the business of "Sealed Chest Auctions".
Yeah I like the idea of a 'Sealed Chest Auction' but sometimes there are going to be a certain 'Bright spark' (cough) who thinks
"Hey if I put a load of dirt then sell it I can make a ton of credits easily"

Unfortunately I think that this might ruin this great idea.

If you can find a way around the 'Simpletons' then yes this is a great idea.

The downside with this is that you made a killing from a ton of random potions, and that's good for you. Problem is, the person who bought them might not like the fact that they just spent 10k on random potions, or, god forbid, an empty chest that you hint is full of diamonds.

I see a few ways for this to work is if you had one specific, trusted realm hold the auctions for people. The realm would see what was in the chest, and maybe give a few hints to what is in the chest. Enthusiasm on the realm's part would be based on the contentss, i.e and empty chest would be "1 credit. Honestly folks, this one isn't really worth it?", and a chest stuffed with ore would be "I'm looking for 5k, pm me your offer of 5k!" and so on.

Individual realms would/could just possibly rip off everyone once and than sit back with all the moneys. And that would not be very nice... D=
I was thinking a guy could stand there with all the auctioned stuff, and then the highest bidder is allowed to enter some room and then can choose how to get his reward:
Either the holder guy suicides (this will lead to many death type choices: burning, suffocating, falling, drowning etc.), or barfs it all out on top.
