You see what I'm getting at?
My vote, and the majority vote in this poll, is leave it alone. Making a limit on where you can /trade is also ridiculous. Say someone wanted to buy TNT. You have a stack of it in a chest at your /home. Unfourtunately, you are 2000 blocks from you /home. So now you must either kill yourself and drop any loot you already have, in order to get the TNT and earn some cash. Or you can't do anything, you make no money, and the person doesn't get any TNT. It's a no win. What it will do though, is encourage people to log on, just to sit in their /home, spamming messages about selling stuff, and getting all the trades because everyone else is too busy doing stuff to just sit at /home.
Please, take you adventure elsewhere. I'd rather have a better economy and less lag any day.
Hmm thats allot of good points. To defend my previous point, I guess people can always find a way of intentionally lagging by mass dropping with /kill anyways. And if people dropped valuables, I'm sure someone would just pick it up anyways. Also, if this became commonplace, people wouldn't venture out with many valuables/ high quantity of items anyways, so I don't really think the lag issue would be such a big thing.
About the economy, again it sounds like a good point. But in defense, I guess it would just promote more to local purchasing, so perhaps people would make a bigger effort to move to a city/ live together, so they could access shops, because the main trade area would be more for bulk purchases if, as you said, some things would be difficult to buy on demand because of the /trade home proximity idea. But again, I think the community would just adapt. I don't think it will be as bad in the long run. Besides, it would make certain valuables harder to get because of the dangerous/ longer return trips. These higher prices would also effect the economy eventually.
So I agree there would be a big change, but I can't say I see it as a bad change. Then again I know I'm just a player on a server, who am I to want to change the entire server to suit my wishes, changing what has been working for everyone else for so long. But that's why I made this poll to see what others think. Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed explanation from your "side of the fence".
