Ok, I just took a fairly long trek up to the North East corner of the map in a hunt for wool and ink sacks. To be honest, I didn't find a lot of sheep or squids along the way, so I inquired in chat. It would seem that there are only a certain number of mobs per server at any one time.

I was wondering if someone with access to the server (Say, Intelli) could see about boosting the number of mob spawns (mostly animals) either soon or when the map expands?

If what I was told is true, then there will be far fewer mobs when the mop goes semi-infinite, which means mob based items.

Also, side question: Are Endermen implemented, and if not, when will they be?

We do not limit the number of mobs. If you have an issue with the number of mobs, contact Notch.

At any given time, there are approximately 5,000 active mobs on the map - this is partially what causes lag when there's a large number of players online. We are definitely not going to look at increasing this. If anything, we would prefer to have the number of mobs decreased.

Perhaps messing with de-spawing would help with that. IIRC, mobs will naturally disappear after a long enough time of not having a player near them. By decreasing the time they must be alone before they de-spawn, but keeping the spawning rate the same, you might be able to decrease the total number of mobs on the server while actually increasing the number of mobs that players encounter.
Edit: Apparently, my assumption that mobs despawn when no players are around is incorrect. Thanks Cog for the correction.

From experience, this seems to not be the case. Mobs seem to act like items: If you leave the area, they stay static and do not despawn. I always assumed this was what kept the mob spawn rate down; When you left a mob, it stayed there until it was killed or despawned when a player was close enough.
